Bloggers all over the world, including myself, are focusing their efforts on the important topic of poverty, to change the conversation for one day.

Living in Vancouver, BC I see a great deal of poverty in my day to day life. Living next to one of the many bridges in the city, I often have to tip toe under the bridge on my way to work, careful not to wake the varied homeless individuals who have been able to find a dry place to sleep for the night. I've habitualized the emotionless head shake in response to the many panhandlers that pepper the downtown streets just like everyone else. Though, my heart does ache every time I see the look of desperation and hopelessness in the eyes of an old man on the streets who's options have clearly dwindled down to very few.

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives recently calculated the living wage in Vancouver to be $16.74 an hour. This living wage is the hourly wage a two income family of four needs to make ends meet. There is consideration for savings or debt repayment in their calculation of this figure. It takes nearly $17 per hour to cover the basics in this city, yet the minimum wage in BC remains at $8 an hour, where it has been since 2001. Reading these figures it's really not surprising that there are so many people living on the streets.

Lets, at least for one moment, turn our attention from the well dressed sad and happy Wall Streeters who are fretting over billions of dollars, and consider the millions of people who are fretting over hundreds of dollars. Here are 3 great tracks that tackle the issue of poverty each in very different ways.

Fast Car - Tracy Chapman

Tracy Chapman (1988)

A heart wrenching telling of one woman's struggle to make ends meet while working a dead end job and dealing with inescapable problems. Chapman won a Grammy in 1988 for this now classic track that highlights the generational nature of poverty. Impoverished children are born to impoverished parents; a very difficult cycle to break, except in the imagination, where one can drive away in a fast car to escape the weight of poverty.

Mr Wendle - Arrested Development

3 Years 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life of-- (1992)

This uplifting take on poverty sheds light on the individuals behind the faces of the homeless on the streets. Speech, the leader of Arrested Development, tells about getting to know a particular homeless man who offers him wisdom and makes him think differently about 'civilized society'. Arrested Development's unique style of hip hop is both fun and playful, despite the fact that they are constantly tackling serious issues. Where are Arrested Development now? Still working their butts off making music and touring the world! The never attainable goal of keeping up with the Jones' underlines this song. The blind greed that entices people to constantly want more perpetuates and increases the gap between the rich and the poor, creating more want for the rich, and more need for the poor.

Doin' My Thing

Do Your Thing - Basement Jaxx

Rooty (2001)

I don't need no TV, I don't need no news
All I need is a bumpin' beat to bump away my blues
I don't give a damn what the people say
I'm gonna do it, gonna do it my way
Gonna let it all out an do my thing
Boom boom boom an a bang bang bang

This is my "Cheer me up" song. When I get into a funk, I give this song a listen, and by the midpoint I'm feeling great and dancing along to the upbeat tempo. The track boasts confidence and an unconventional sexiness with unforgiving abandon. The upbeat piano and percussion is peppered with fun electronic bleeps and bloops that are brought into full splendor with soulful vocals.

The creative pair, Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe that are Basement Jaxx, hail from the UK, where they have been releasing their unique blend of House music since 1999. They have recently released the EP Planet 2 in the UK, and have announced that they will be touring through the UK in February 2009. The young DJ's career is skyrocketing, from humble beginnings in South Africa to getting signed with the UK's Warp Records. Apparently, according to Iyare over at 6 Mix, DJ Mujava got started by passing his demo CD to taxi drivers around town, who in turn passed the word around. That's grass roots at it's finest!

The track reminds me of Booka Shade & MANDY's track Body Language, as it has that very 'now' dance sound, with interesting synth melodies over the ever present beat. Please enjoy it! Why is that? When their newest album Viva La Vida was released a few months back, I was overwhelmed with the huge reaction from the blogsphere... everyone and their blogging dog was going gah gah for a fresh disk full of Coldplay goodies. The singles were flying over the airwaves, into the malls and cafes. The sensitive sounds of Chris Martin's voice over beautiful instrumentations could not be escaped! Even though I adored their previous releases, I rebelled! I wanted nothing to do with this new album. Yes, I was sure that its good... but its formulaic. Its typical. Its exactly what you would expect from Coldplay. After all, their previous albums all contained gems of pure beauty, which capture the soul to take you away to a distant land where the only things that matter are harmony, beauty, and love. Great... just what I need!

I gave in this week. I could no longer resist it's call. Vida la Vida is in my hot little hands, and I don't plan to let it go. Yes it's formulaic, but the formula belongs only to Coldplay. Try as I might, I cannot do anything but adore their music. Please Coldplay, continue to be typically you! I will not resist again.

I've posted my favourite track from the album: Strawberry Swing. It is beautiful with Coldplay's masterful interplay of strings with guitar, a calming yet uplifting rhythm.

Talk (Junkie XL Remix)

Talk (2006)

I had to include the best remix of any Coldplay song anywhere, in my very humble opinion. Junkie XL's remix of Talk is nothing short of breath taking. The track is a long one, clocking in at over 11 and a half minutes, a beautiful journey that is not to be missed.

Jacques Lu Cont Hard at Work With The Killers

The Killers

I just heard from Pretty Much Amazing that The Killers have been hard at work with producer extraordinaire, Stuart Price, aka Jacques Lu Cont. Welcome to your 30's!

Some Candy Talking - Chris Whitley

(1984)

Chris Whitley's version of this song, originally by The Jesus and Mary Chain, is a radical departure. Where the original is light and airy, Whitley's version dark and visceral. The raw power of lust is unmistakable in Whitley's voice, despite the heavy use of euphemisms in the lyrics.

I had the pleasure of both meeting Chris Whitley, and seeing him perform live before he left us in 2005. He showed my friend a few tricks on the slide guitar in the Victoria hot spot of the time, Legends, where he played later that night. A very skillful guitar player, and thoughtful song writer. Rest in peace Chris Whitley, you will not be forgotten!

Disarm - Amie Miriello

(1984)

I recently found this version of Disarm by Amie Miriello that she, according to her myspace blog has made for a Smashing Pumpkins tribute album. The powerful bells and bass drum of the original have been replaced with the acoustic guitar and Miriello's beautiful voice. This version is well worth a listen, perhaps it will lead you to explore her album I Came Around which was released just last week.

If you are hungry for some more Smashing Pumpkins, run out and get Guitar Hero® World Tour when it's released in late October. They have contributed songs to newest incarnation of the popular game, including a brand new single, G.L.O.W., as an exclusive download.

Novalima

Machete - Novalima

Afro (2006)

It's official! Perfect and I have booked our tickets... we are off to Peru for a month at Christmas time. We are terribly excited, and now that the tickets are paid for, it finally feels real.

To celebrate I'd like to share with you my favorite song from an album that Perfect's sister shared with us: Novalima's Afro. Novalima is a group of Peruvian musicians and DJs who have come together to produce updated adaptations of traditional Afro-Peruvian Music with the help of many international guest artists. The songs, some dating back hundreds of years, have been given a modern flare, with electronic elements and masterful production. The music is interesting and unique; a quality listen! Novalima have been at it again, as they are set to release their next album, Coba Coba, on October 31st 2008 on Cumbancha Records.

Mix-tastic I - Legends Remixed

I love a remix! A producer takes another artist's song, cuts it up and makes something entirely new and completely his, or her own, while still giving props to the original artist. Perhaps the new highest form of flattery? Or might blogging about the artists and remixers be the new highest form of flattery?

To celebrate the artists, remixers and the BEATS, I introduce the first post in the multi-part series: Mix-tastic!

These three classic tracks would have been remembered for many years to come without the aid of a remix. But the remixes still give the tracks just a little more weight than they had before. Each of them tantalizes the ear with sounds of the familiar while making the body move to a new beat!

I'm on Fire (Cousin Cole's Bad Desire Mix) - Bruce Springsteen

Born in the USA (1984)

This track has a very deep classic sound. The beauty of Springsteen's original is amplified by Cousin Cole's smooth editing. The lyrics to this song amaze me. Only The Boss could get away with lyrics as dirty as these while maintaining such a pure and lovable image.

Hey little girl is your daddy home
Did he go away and leave you all alone
I got a bad desire
Im on fire

Tell me now baby is he good to you
Can he do to you the things that I do
I can take you higher
Im on fire

Did he really say that? Doesn't matter... he's The Boss and we love 'em!
Cousin Cole, based in NYC, is both an accomplished remixer and a co-owner of the Flagrant Fowl label. He has a has a funky remix of Timberland's The Way I Are up at his myspace page, check it out!

Jolene (DJ Soap's BMAF Remix) - Dolly Parton

Jolene (1974)

Don't let the beginning of the track fool you... it's slightly annoying beginning, with the quickly repeating "Jo" sample is overwhelmed by a captivating layering of guitars and Dolly's signature voice. She pleads to the stunning beauty, Jolene, to leave her man alone, with her voice full of devotion, determination and desperation. Parton wrote Jolene at the tender age of 28 in 1974, 8 years after marrying her husband Carl Dean, whom she is still happily married to today. Seems to me that Jolene, whether she be a bank teller, or a concert goer, never had a chance.

DJ Soap is a Mid-Western dynamo, working hard as a DJ, remixer and promoter. His popularity is brewing now as a result of this BAMF remix of Jolene. With one of their best known tracks, Heroin, taking the listener through a turbulent high with the band members. The band has often insisted they, by no means, glorified the use of heroin. To me, it would be difficult to dispute this after listening to their songs, which often allude to desperation, nihilism, and loneliness within the context of drug addiction.

The Velvet Underground were well before their time, laying the ground work for "alternative" music with their unique use of the electric viola, hypnotic rhythms from both guitar and percussion and unapologetic attitude. I've posted their classic track I'm Waiting for the Manfor your listening pleasure, a song about the painful wait every addict experiences when waiting for the guy with the stuff. It comes from the 1967 album The Velvet Underground & Nico, that is full of classic tunes from this ground breaking group. You may remember Nico from the depiction of her in the 1991 Oliver Stone film The Doors. She was the lovely lady who gave Jim Morrison some special attention in the elevator after Andy Warhol's party.

Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones

Let it Bleed (1969)

For those of us that weren't around through the 60s and 70s it's difficult to believe that The Rolling Stones deserve the huge acclaim, fame, and credibility that they have. Sure Start Me Up is a pretty good song, but there's got to be more, doesn't there? Yes! The Stones released a wealth of stunning material through their early career, including a handful of classic tracks that will likely never be forgotten. Gimme Shelter is one of these tracks. Released during the Vietnam War, the song embodies both the fear and the rebellious nature of the time. A classic track representing both the tremendous talents of The Rolling Stones, and the turbulent times they were in.

While I'm of the opinion that it's long past the time that The Stones should be moving on to being producers, where they can share their wealth of experience with the young up and comers from behind the scenes, I'll admit that their back catalog is well worth sifting through. If you are looking to find some old gems, I suggest checking out December's Children, Let it Bleed, and Sticky Fingers.

Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie

Ziggy Stardust (1972)

Ziggy Stardust comes from Bowie's 1972 masterpiece The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, a concept album about the alien rock star Ziggy Stardust, who has come to earth to share his message of peace and love with the Earthlings who quickly worshiped him. The story turns tragic when Ziggy falls to the rock star life style of drugs and excess. A must listen that comes to us from the beginnings of the glam rock era.

Lykke Li's Album out today!

Everybody But Me(diskJokke Remix) - Lykke Li

Young Novels (2008)

Lykke Li has been heating up the music blogsphere for a few months, since RCRD LBL released a couple of her choice tracks for our sampling pleasure. Today her debut full length album is available in both physical and digital music stores. I hope this is the beginning of a long career for the young Sweedish artist.

Dance, Dance, Dance was the song that first got my attention. It is an adorable ditty in which Li sings of her ironic love of dancing, because deep down she's shy, shy, shy. I highly recommend you download a copy from RCRD LBL. I have included a copy of the diskJokke remix of Everybody But Me, which is a beautiful remix of her minimalistic track about those nights when you're out on the town, but you just aren't feelin' it. Her unique sound combines an innocence of child-like wonderment with a musical mastery, layering . I don't know anything about the film, but the song is a captivating orchestration of Indian instrumentations and vocals that incorporates tradition, flare and humour.

I loved Katee & Josh's dance so much, I wanted to share it with you, but when I found the original scene from the Bollywood film the performance was taken from, I knew I'd have to include it too, because it is quite a spectacle!

Enjoy!

Now, Katee and Josh's performance:

I very much enjoy Bhangra music, but have very little of it! The fame that comes to the artists behind these cultural phenomena, is likely both a blessing and a curse. It's inevitable that someone will start to throw around the "Sellout" label, and the artists lose the street cred earned by being broke and unsigned. The symbiotic relationship between the artists and Apple works to sell the music, the store to buy the music (iTunes), and the hardware to play the music (iPod). That's some mighty impressive vertical integration.

1 2 3 4 - Feist

The Reminder (2007)

The Canadian singer-songwriter has released 4 solo albums since 1999 while also performing as a member of the Broken Social Scene since 2000. Feist found moderate success with her hard work, but when Apple selected her song 1 2 3 4 for one of their iPod commercials her popularity soared, springboarding her the point that Sesame Street asked her to remake her song for the purpose of teaching kids how fun it is to count to 4.

Shut Up and Let Me Go - The Ting Tings

We Started Nothing (2008)

Often the very well paid marketing wonders at Apple beat me to the punch, but with The Ting Tings I can enjoy the satisfaction in knowing that I found them first. I had been enjoying their catchy pop genius for several months when I heard the rumours that they would be the next iPod poster children. Apple choose to use Shut Up and Let Me Go one of the lesser songs by The Ting Tings. I prefer their tunes That's Not My Name and Great DJ, and strongly suggest you check them you if you like this track.

New Soul - Yael Naïm

Yael Naïm (March 2008)

The Israeli-French singer-songwriter was completely unknown to me before I first saw the commercial for the MacBook Air. Apparently Steve Jobs picked this track himself causing Yael Naïm's career to skyrocket, making her the first Israeli to get a single in the US Top 10.

"New Soul" is about self-reflection. She says she was inspired to write it after a conversation with a friend about reincarnation. "I thought I was an old soul, and that I knew life, but then starting the real life I figured I am completely new," Naim says. "I mean, everything was a mess and I did a lot of mistakes. So it was just looking back and say, 'Okay, let's start again, it's okay.'"
- Interview with the NPR March 21st, 2008

The wise young soul is currently touring extensively through Europe.

Mi Swing Es Tropical - Quantic & Nickodemus

Ritmo Tropical (2004)

Nickodemus, an experienced young DJ from New York City, joined forces with Quantic, to create this upbeat Latin tune that is perfect for dancing! These two have both been busy since the upbeat commercial brought their sound into the mainstream. Quantic just released a new album, Death of the Revolution and Nickodenmus released Endangered Species Remixed, featuring a remix of every tune off the album Mi Swing Es Tropical was originally released on, Endangered Species. The pair toured together in Columbia, Mexico and the US earlier this year.

I should also make note of the fact that the song, Flathead, featured in my previous post by The Fratellis was also highlighted in one of the colorful, people dancing about iPod commercials.

Zoom, Zoom, Zoom

Capoeira

I couldn't resist posting this song, even though it doesn't quite fit with the others being that it has no association with Apple whatsoever. it has been a favourite of mine since I tracked if down after hearing it on one of the early Mazda Zoom Zoom commercials in the late 90s. A remake of the traditional Capoeira song Zum, Zum, Zum Capoeira Mata Um that was featured on the Only The Strong soundtrack, the 1993 film about Capoeira. I'm sure you have all heard parts of this song on the commercials with that cute kid whispering Zoom Zoom, who isn't really a kid any more. The song is fun and uplifting. By the way... I tried Capoeira once, the pros of the Brazilian dance/fighting style make it look easy, but really, it's quite hard.

The Verve Remixed

Verve Records is a long standing record label with its origins dating back to 1956 when Norman Granz amalgamated Norgran Records and Clef Records. The label was host to many of the great artists in Jazz & Blues including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Nina Simone. Now, as a part of Universal, Verve Records has invited talented producers and musicians to revitalize its catalog by remixing their classic tracks and re-releasing them as a series of albums called The Verve Remixed. Volume 4 was released last May. To celebrate this union of the old with the new, I offer you my favorite track from each of the albums in The Verve Remixed collection.

See-Line Woman (Masters At Work Remix) - Nina Simone

Verve Remixed (2002)

Nina Simone had a long and diverse career releasing 37 albums over 35 years (1958 - 1993). She was also a powerful figure in the Civil rights movement, having one of her protest songs, Mississippi Goddam, boycotted in some states during the 1960's. This version of See-Line Woman remixed by Masters At Work is often heard in the coolest of cafes and lounges. The extended 10 minute version gives the listener a glimpse of the lonely life of a skilled lady of the night with beautiful piano, rhythmic clapping, a knowing flute and Simone's haunting voice.

Sinnerman (Felix Da Housecat's Heavenly House Mix) - Nina Simone

Verve Remixed 2 (2003)

Another Nina Simone remix, I couldn't resist. There are many remixes of Nina Simone out there, including a full CD in the Remixed & Reimagined series. It is common to hear this version of Sinnerman remixed by Felix Da Housecat in the hip hang out joints as well. The song lends itself both to chillin' and to dancing with its down tempo beat. The traditional American gospel song has come along way since its grass roots origins believed to be in the early 1900's.

Fever (Adam Freeland Remix) - Sarah Vaughan

Verve Remixed 3 (2005)

The classic track Fever by Sarah Vaughan is made even sexier by Adam Freeland's touch. Devilishly combining Sarah Vaughan's sultry voice with an updated tempo, Freeland masterfully brings this old tune new life, while keeping a classic feel with horns and a full dance hall sound.

California Soul (Diplo Remix) - Marlena Shaw

Verve Remixed 4 (2008)

Diplo revitalized Marlena Shaw's 1969 version of California Soul, giving it a powerful, almost inspirational quality that makes you hold your head up high as you get that "nothing can touch me" feeling. Marlena Shaw, despite changing her last name from Burgess (I'm proud to be a Burge!) to Shaw, has enjoyed a long career, releasing 14 albums on 6 labels over 30 years (1967 - 1997). She continues to perform today! Diplo has been gaining popularity since he started doing remixes in 2005 for the likes of Kanye West, Hot Chip and Bloc Party.

The Fratellis

I was watching Much Music last Friday and I think it's safe to say that The Wedge remains the last vestige of quality music television, at least in North America. What was once valuable airtime for music videos and live performances is now squandered on the latest "A Star is Born" incarnation and canceled teen drama reruns.

Nonetheless, I was happy to see some quality videos during that much appreciated hour of alt-music video programming, including one standout video from the Scottish trio The Fratellis. The video for Flathead is terribly Mod, with three 1950's pin-up girls dancing about all coyly as the guys in the band float around the screen playing their Brit Pop crossed with alt-country brand of music.

Dance Fit

Over the past couple of months I have learned how fun it can be to sweat in a room full of people dancing in time to popular music, desperately trying to stay in step with the instructor. From my love of Dance Fit I've become quite fond of some very Top 40, popular with the kids these days, tracks (quite uncharacteristic for me)! I'm all about embracing the fun and the beat these days, so I offer you two of my favorite tracks I was introduced to by my Dance Fit instructor.

When I Grow Up - Pussycat Dolls

When I Grow Up (2008)

Upon a quick listen to this song it sounded to me that the lyrics went:

When I grow up
I wanna be famous
I wanna be a star
I wanna be in movies

When I grow up
I wanna see the world
Drive nice cars
I wanna have Boobies

Sadly the song became just a little less fun for me when I realized that the last word was actually "Groupies". Oh well... The song is still fun and gets me swaying my hips and sweatin' every time!

Shake It - Metro Station

Metro Station (2008)

This young band from California offers us this ridiculously catchy tune. The lyrics describe the type of shakin' I doubt the majority of Metro Station's primary audience has yet experienced. The song is reminiscent of 80's synth pop with fun, yet dirty lyrics. I love when an artist takes a song made popular by another and redoes it, not in the same old way as the original version, but in a fresh, and new way; completely making it their own. I dedicate this series to those who are brave to take a great song of another, and put out their own unique version of it for all to hear, and judge against the original. On with the covers!

You Really Got a Hold On Me - She & Him

Volume One (2008)

This is the best version of this song I have heard since the big and beautiful blond, Bonnie Bramlett, belted out the classic on the picnic table in the Conner back yard during an early episode of Rosanne. Originally written by Smokey Robinson in 1962, the song embodies the pleasureful pain that comes from loving someone so much it hurts. The collaboration by actress Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, She & Him, brought us the album Volume One in March 2008. This track is my favorite from the album. It showcases the beautiful vocals of Deschanel in a stunning duet with Ward, with the unobtrusive yet divine acoustic guitar accompaniment that takes the listener to the place where Robinson must have been when he penned this classic.

Don't Come Around Here No More - Vampire Weekend

The young up and comers Vampire Weekend with Andrew W.K. gave props to the legend Tom Petty a week or so ago in Central Park, NYC, by doing their version of "Don't Come Around Here No More". I have much loved the musical offerings from Tom Petty for many years, since my sister gave me a copy of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' Greatest Hits for Christmas in '93. I fully share Vampire Weekend's sentiment when they proclaim Tom Petty as a "true fucking poet"! To think I was going to add her as a friend on myspace! Girard Knox has joined forces with Dave Moran, Christopher Ellis, and Owen Connell as The British Columbians, and they expect their first full length release to be available Summer 2008. In preparation for the CD release they have put together a myspace page, including 4 excellent tracks from the upcoming record. These samplings range from hauntingly beautiful laments to raccous, foot-stomping, hometown bangers. A little rock, a little alt-country; all original, and all well worth a listen! I'm currently patiently waiting for the illustrious Tom Waits to accept my friend invitation. How silly! In the mean time, I found some reading material: "Tom Waits' True Confessions", an interview Waits did with himself. What better forum to say all the stuff he wants to say, to vent the frustrations from answering the stock questions the average music writer throws his way. The interview is an entertaining read, with quintessential Waits-isms such as:

Q: What is a gentleman?
A: A man who can play the accordion, but doesn't.

Q: What is on Hemmingway's gravestone?
A: "Pardon me for not getting up."

Check it out over at Tom Wait's myspace blog.

The Old 97's

Blame it on Gravity (2008)

The Old 97's are playing at Richards on Richards tonight... I'll admit to being a little bummed that I can't go, though it's bittersweet (one of Perfect's clients is treating us to a fancy dinner and this evening's performance of Cirque du Soleil's Corteo. I'm sure I'll be missing a fabulous show this evening, as these guys are known for their fun and lively gigs, as highlighted in the not so romantic comedy The Break Up, with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. I've long been a fan of this delightfully raucous alt-country act from Dallas TX, who have just released their 7th disc, Blame it on Gravity on NewWest Records.

For your listening pleasure I offer one of my favorite, lesser known Old 97's tracks, Buick City Complex, from their 2001 album Satellite Rides; a somewhat apathetic love song set during the collapse of the Flint MI auto factory industry (for more on this story, I highly recommend Michael Moore's first documentary Roger & Me).

Buick City Complex

And for your viewing pleasure, the video for the first single from the new album: Dance with Me, a tribute to geeks everywhere, particularly those who are fans of Battlestar Galactica.

Playing the Building

One of my favorite wacky geniuses has turned an old building into a musical instrument. David Byrne's latest project is entitled "Playing the Building", an art installation in which he's connected various parts and pieces of the Battery Maritime Building in Manhattan to an old pump organ. In his words: "If its got drums and a guitar I stayed clear!". While I can understand the rationality behind the fear of big hair, skinny jeaned rockers, I believe that Perfect has missed out on a wide range of musical offerings by the palest of the races. So I offer, for his, and your benefit a multi-part series: A White Music Education.

Shake Rattle and Roll - Elvis Presley
Best to start with the beginnings of modern white people music... The great Elvis Presley. I don't want to give the impression that Perfect some how got to adulthood without hearing of the King of Rock & Roll. He certainly knows of Elvis Presley, but he lacks an appreciation of the great contributions from The King. Bringing the rhythm and melodies of the African American music of the time to the North American masses, Elvis fused the sounds of rockabilly, rhythm & blues, country, & gospel into a very new and unique sound that changed the landscape of music forever.

Below is the video of Elvis Presley's first performance on TV, on The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show on January 28th 1956. From the times when metaphors had to be used to say the dirty things that was on everyone's minds.

I'm like a one eyed cat peeping in a seafood store.
Well I can look at you tell you ain't no child no more
...
Shake, rattle and roll

Yikes! No wonder Elvis was always getting in trouble! Enjoy:

I Am the Walrus - The Beatles
Perfect is definitely aware of the Fab Four Four as well. They're contribution to modern music is undeniable. Ranging from the well dressed, clean cut, accessible pop of the early days in the 50's, to the greasy, politically driven, drug induced creative gems of the later days. The Beatles ran the full gambit. The later era is my favorite, complete with technicolor petticoats! The song "I am the Walrus" is beautifully strange and creative; well orchestrated strings combine with the musical offerings of John, Paul, George and Ringo, with Lennon's strange vocals professing to the world that he is the Walrus.

Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye.
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,
Boy, you been a naughty girl and you let your knickers down.
I am the eggman (woo), they are the eggmen (woo), I am the walrus,
Coo coo, kachoo.

What does does it mean?!?! Apparently, the song, written by Lennon, was a combination of 3 separate song ideas. One of which was some nonsense to throw off his old grade school teacher, who, he had heard, was getting his students to analyze Beatles lyrics for class. The Video for "I am the Walrus" that dates back to 1967 (They made music videos back then?) is posted below for your enjoyment.

Troubled Under Foot - Led Zepplin

Physical Grafitti (1975)

The influence of Led Zepplin will be felt for many years through the great chain that grows as emerging bands show the influence of their influencers' influences. Led Zepplin certainly did their part to bring the long-haired, skinny jean rocker image into popularity, but they backed it up with pure talent and skill, recording dozens of master pieces through their 11 year reign.

Another song ripe with dirty metaphors, "Trampled Under Foot" comes from Led Zepplin's double album release in 1975, Physical Grafitti. I recall dancing to this track at a small family gathering in honour of my turning of age. One of my sisters turned to me and said: "Imagine, they released this record when we were your age". How amazing it must have been! The thick rhythms kept by the late John Bonham chase the catchy keyboard melodies of John Paul Jones around this track, with the accompaniment of Jimmy Page's masterful guitar playing and Robert Plant's enticingly filthy lyrics:

Come to me for service every hundred miles
Baby, let me check your valves, fix your overdrive

Yikes... this post is getting a little too steamy!

Patience on the Golden Path

Both The Flaming Lips and The Chemical Brothers have been favourite artists of mine for many years. When I first heard of their pending collaboration a few years back I was a little taken aback... what an odd pair! But I was excited nonetheless, to hear what the unlikely pairing might result in.

The Golden Path - The Flaming Lips & Chemical Brothers

Singles 93-03 (2003)

I rushed out to get The Chemical Brothers' compilation disc, Singles 93-03, the day it came out in excitement for this one song. I already owned most of the discs put out by The Chemical Brothers, I certainly didn't need this compilations cd. To tell the truth, I was a little put off by The Golden Path at first listen, thinking it odd and not good for dancing. But I didn't give up on it, how could so much talent put together not result in a great tune? My patience paid off. The song quickly grew on me. The quirky vocals of Wayne Coyne tells a bizarre tale of a journey into the unknown, encountering both specters and demons. When he is confronted with the devil himself, he calls out:

Help me lord!
I found myself in some kind of Hell!
But I did not believe in a heaven and hell,
world in opposites, kind of reality.
And I gained control of myself,
and I decided to press on.

Can you imagine being face to face with Lucifer, then denying his apparent existence because you don't believe in such simple dichotomies? How absurdly beautiful! The track itself is lined with The Chemical Brothers' unique style of impeccably timed electronic sounds that perfectly highlight Coyne's vocals. This track was definitely worth the purchase. I encourage you to give it a listen, and please, be patient!

The Sunshine Underground - The Chemical Brothers

Surrender (1999)

The Chemical Brothers are known for epic electronic tunes. The Sunshine Underground certainly adds to this image. One the best examples of a song that slowly, and expertly builds to a massive climax, bringing in multiple layers and elements at every turn. If you don`t have the patience to listen to the 5 minute build up you will miss the sonic beauty that the duo from the UK skillfully craft at the pinnacle of this masterpiece. This under-celebrated track is from Surrender, the 3rd of 6 full length releases by The Chemical Brothers. The pair remain very active in the industry as they released We are the Night last summer, and continue to do shows through Europe and the UK, though any stops in North America are unlikely. :(

Do You Realize - The Flaming Lips

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002)

The Flaming Lips have long been one of my favourites because of their wacky and fun style! This humble offering from the boys from Oklahoma is in typical Flaming Lips fashion, but it illustrates a new level of musical maturity and skill than their previous singles. Being from the 10th of 11 full length releases, The Flaming Lips' experience shines through the soaring guitars, chiming bells and the unobtrusive but engaging percussions. The lyrics and vocals accentuates the child-like wonder of this track in a way that only Wayne Coyne can offer. Simple, yet poignant, the lyrics remind the listener to realize that our time here is finite, and shouldn't be wasted. Watch for The Flaming Lips on the festival circuit this summer!

Some New Stuff

After that super long Top 10 post, which took forever to write, I think it's time for some new stuff.

Everyone Nose - N*E*R*D

N.E.R.D.

After a long hiatus (4 years) N*E*R*D, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo from The Neptunes along with Shay Haley, are to release a new album called Seeing Sounds in June, and are currently touring with Kanye West in support of that record. The first single, Everyone Knows, was released on their Billionaire Boys Club blog, devoted mostly to their clothing and shoe lines. A very enterprising group of men to say the least! The track is a bona fide original! It opens with an a capella chant of "All the girls standing in the line for the bathroom", then breaks into to funky beats and bass with Pharrell's unique vocals leading the listener through a scene in a club. Containing one of my favourite lines: "A hundred dollar bills! Look atchoo, atchoo!", this track is super fun, funky and terribly cool.

Campus - Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend (2008)

The blogsphere has been all over this brand new group from New York, and for good reason. The well crafted tunes from these talented artists are both catchy and technically impressive. The effortless compositions with both African and alterna-rock influences catch the ear and make the feet want to more. Their debut, self-titled album has many great tracks, but my favourite is Campus. Though a really fun and upbeat track, it seems to be about a time of post break and continually seeing the ex on campus. The catchy chorus: "How am I supposed to pretend, I never want to see you again" gets my hand waving in the air in time with the beat every time I listen hear this song.

Day 'N Nite (Crooker's Remix) - Kid Cudi

Day 'n' Nite (2008)

Annie Mac dropped this track for the first time last week on her show The Mash Up on BBC Radio 1. It's fresh beats gets the head bopping at the outset. The track keeps it interesting by switching it up often. A hip hop feel, crazy cut ups, a touch of R&B mashed up with some Drum & Bass... this song has it all! Even a dynamic use of an industrial alarm is included in this mix of the highly acclaimed hip hop offering by the Ohio based artist. Kid Cudi is all about the music. He has yet to release a proper album, but he has developed his own unique sound. Not driven by the bling that his counterparts so frequently rap about, he prefers to concentrate "on making something powerful, something that’s beyond words" (HHNLive Interview), a very respectable attitude for a new-comer(ish) to the hip hop scene. This fresh mix is my introduction to the Crookers, but the duo hailing from Italy bring this track such fabulous dancability that I'll have to check into more of their work for sure!

Get to know me... Its still an excellent view of my personal tastes in music.

My tastes are very diverse from old school rock n' roll, new dance beats, soulful country... I love it all. I expect a future post showcasing my favourite tunes that feature this reassuring phrase. What could be more comforting then hearing that "Everything is going to be Alright"? I believe my introduction to this track was by Pete Tong on Radio 1 (I am an avid Radio 1 listener!). Alright was dropped on the Ibiza scene back in 2004, and subsequently made it to the Billboard Dance Top 40 in late 2005. The best experience I've had listening to this track was during Tiësto's show at GM Place the Summer of 2007. The image to the left links to the DVD Tiësto is putting out for that next week. The crew was all present, including Perfect (my love, who isn't really perfect, but he's definitely perfectly imperfect), the crowd was all fired up, and he dropped this track with the laser light show in perfect sync. We killed it to this song that night! A beautiful crowd pleaser with an effective use of a piano mixed into a mood lifting house track. There isn't much of a web presence for Red Carpet, but via Wikipedia I was able to determine that the group is from Belgium and consists of the mixing duo Den Hetrix and Raffaele Brescia with vocals by Ramona Korber. There is certainly more than one musical acts out there with the name "Red Carpet". It seems the name has been dropped and half of the duo is continuing on as Hetrix.

9. Lose Control (Jacques Lu Cont Remix) - Missy Elliot

Lose Control Maxi Single (2005)

Hypnotic, Robotic.
Hypnotic, Robotic
Rock Your Body

This Missy Elliot sample, through many different distortions, pounds through this thick mix from start to finish. Missy's unique style is given a fresh dance feel that doesn't miss a beat. Jacques Lu Cont, Stuart Price, the Thin White Duke... no matter what he calls himself, he kills it! Without a doubt, he is my favourite remixer. Bringing choice tracks a new life via his natural ear for what will make people move, Jacques Lu Cont has proven over and over that he has the magic touch. The British musician has transformed tracks from several high profile artists including Gwen Stefani, The Killers, and Coldplay, as well as being an accomplished producer, adding a full Madonna album, Confessions on a Dance Floor, to his resume in late 2005.

8. Slide In (DFA Remix) - Goldfrapp

Supernature (2006)

There is really nothing better then a good Goldfrapp remix! And there are many as Goldfrapp graciously gave us a full album of remixes, We Are Glitter, complementing their critically and commercially acclaimed album Supernature . It was difficult for me to decide which track to highlight in this post. The debate came down to this track or the Superchumbo remix of Number 1. DFA's remix of Slide In finally won out. With the elegant voice of Alison Goldfrapp put to unstoppable, funky beats, how could it not get your feet moving? The track is filled with unique percussion arrangements including the much loved cow bell!

Goldfrapp's new album, Seventh Tree, was released this past February. Another beautiful offering from the London duo, but as of yet, there haven't been any remixes worth mentioning. I hope for some to surface soon! DFA has done a great number fabulous remixes. Both a record label and a remixing team, they are well worth checking out as well.

7. Apply Some Preasure - Mark Ronson

Version (2007)

In the early spring of 2007 Mark Ronson released an album of covers called Version. From it comes a fabulous track, his cover of Maxïmo Park's Apply Some Pressure. Mark Ronson turns a raucous alt-rock tune into a stunning classic with the modern use of strings and horns combined with the common alterna-rock instruments and the familiar voice of Paul Smith, the lead singer of Maximo Park. From the outset the track pulls the listener in with a tight beat and an excellent orchestration. The song builds to a massive crescendo where I find it impossible to not sing and dance along. Answering the difficult question:

What happens when you lose everything?
You start again...
Start all over again.

You certainly don't get to dance to such true words of wisdom very often! Mark Ronson's has been getting a lot of attention since the release of Version and from producing several hits by the likes of Amy Winehouse, Robbie Williams and Lily Allen. I'm eager to see what he comes out with next!

6. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart - Wilco

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002)

The opening track from Wilco's infamous 4th album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot takes the listener on a dynamic journey through the bizarre yet gentle lyrics of Jeff Tweedy mixed to the masterful production of Jim O'Rourke. An effective use of a metronome and alarm clock open the track with organized chaos. The tortured vocals of Jeff Tweedy illustrates the pain of love lost and the sheer confusion that occurs during the initial attempts of going on with her. A song that can completely consume you if you let it. I recommend a listen in the dark with head phones cranked up really loud.

Wilco have put out two full length albums since the release of YHF, A Ghost is Born and Sky Blue Sky, both quality records, but in my opinion no song on either release can touch the stunning beauty of I Am Trying to Break Your Heart. Also worth noting is that YHF comes with the great story of a band dropped from its label and getting resigned for the same album that was thought to not be commercially feasible. Find out more from the documentary of the same name as this track I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, a good film for any Wilco fan.

5. Dreamer - Jenn Grant

Orchestra for the Moon (2008)

I am especially impressed when a Canadian artist comes out with a brilliant album, as I am a firm believer that CANCON encourages mediocrity. Jenn Grant has impressed me! A whimsical beauty flows through her songs, pulling the listener into a simple and beautiful place. The song is danceable yet dreamy, as the title might suggest, with Jenn Grant's classic girl next door voice, both pure and clear, sailing above the haunting melodies and unobtrusive percussions. Hailing from PEI in the Maritimes, Jenn Grant's career is taking off with support from the CBC to release her debut album Orchestra for the Moon complete with collaborations with other well known Eastern Canada artists including Ron Sexsmith. I have yet to listen to the album in full, but I have listened to Dreamer over and over, and it has yet to lose its beauty or appeal.

4. God Only Knows - The Beach Boys

Pet Sounds (1966)

The beautifully crafted tribute to love is brought to life by the masterful interplay of vocal harmonies by The Beach Boys. Composed by Brian Wilson, God Only Knows was the fist pop song to have the word God in the title. Apparently there were fears that the track would impose a square image on the Californian boys. Originally released on Pet Sounds in 1966, the song has been resurrected many times on various compilations, soundtracks and cover versions. Most recently it has been given new life as the theme song of the HBO show Big Love. As this is currently "our song" and will always remind me of Perfect; it is a love song that is very dear to my heart. The well crafted lyrics juxtapose the honest truth that life goes on after love dies, with the unavoidable devastation experienced when love is lost. The delicate layering of vocals, strings and light percussions come together with such ease and skill as can only come from The Beach Boys.

3. Earth Died Screaming - Tom Waits

Bone Machine (1992)

I had a very difficult time selecting the right track from Tom Waits' substantial cataloge for this list, as he has been has been one of my favourite artists for many, many years. I eventually decided on the track that started my long relationship with Tom Waits back in the mid '90s. I first heard Earth Died Screaming at my friend's cousin's house when he put his vinyl copy of Bone Machine on the record player. I still recall my first impressions of the strange, but beautiful percussions with the raspy, almost frightening, voice of Tom Waits layered on top, telling the tale of a past apocalypse via the most uniquely crafted lyrics I had ever heard. Waits' style has varied greatly over the past 35+ years that he has been releasing albums. But Bone Machine is a good introduction to Tom Waits if you are interested in checking his music out but are not quite sure where to start. I've seen Waits live a couple of times. His shows are brilliant spectacles. I am super excited hear the rumours of Tom's summer 2008 tour plans. I've got my fingers crossed for a stop in Vancouver.

2. Staring at the Sun - TV on the Radio

Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes (2004)

New York based TV on the Radio let this stunning track loose on to the indie scene in 2003 on their EP Young Liars then again on their debut full length release Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, Brooklyn. The quintet combine the raw power of sex with intriguing lyrics, and an unstoppable rhythm. Almost simplistic at times, layers upon layers of sounds join the vocals that start the track off. By the half way point, the raucous interplay of the numerous elements dance about each other like a complex round robin. While the music captures the ear, the mind is occupied by lyrics that capture the pure desperation of lust while remaining tastefully cryptic. This track is already a classic, in my humble opinion; I expect to hear it resurface many times in the years to come.

1. Road to Nowhere - Talking Heads

Little Creatures (1985)

My top song of all time, and the namesake of this blog! Road to Nowhere has been one of my favourites for nearly as long as I can remember. I first heard it in the late 80's while sitting on the floor in my sister's living room when she put Little Creatures on the record player. I loved it. But it wasn't until I heard it again at the end of that old Fred Savage movie Little Monsters that I knew I had to seek out my own copy. The the lyrics sung by a non-illustrious choir instill feeling of acceptance and inclusion that is quite uncommon in these times. The wacky genius of David Byrne is showcased in this simple ditty... putting words and a marching beat to my philosophy in life.

Maybe you wonder where you are
I don't care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there...take you there

I don't know where I'm going, but I'm going... and lovin' every second of the journey! With these song in heavy rotation on my mp3 player.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://road-2-nowhere.blogspot.com/2008/04/get-to-know-my-tastes-my-top-10.html' title='Get to know me...
